To come to Cáceres in March is to attend one of nature's most incredible spectacles, the Cherry Blossom Festival. The landscapes, always playing with greens and ochres, depending on the season, are now dyed white with the flowering of the cherry trees in the Jerte Valley. More than a million and a half of them announce that spring is about to arrive, covering the whole valley with a snowy mantle of flowers.
You may be familiar with this festival, if not from Cáceres, then from Japan. Such a distant country finds a link with our culture in this celebration of nature. There, the cherry blossom is celebrated every year with a touch of mysticism: the beauty of the ephemeral, life and rebirth, all very closely linked to Buddhism. Here the celebration is more earthy. The cherry blossom is a display of nature, but also of the life of the valley, its agricultural activity, its culture and customs. And, from mid-March, it is a wonderful excuse to discover the valley and enjoy its culture and gastronomy.
Our recommendation is that you take one of the routes that run through the region and climb up to the viewpoints scattered around the Jerte Valley to observe from above the mantle created by the cherry blossom trees. And, while you're at it, you can visit the villages scattered around the valley, which at this time of year are more beautiful than ever. A very attractive option is to take one of these routes with a guide to enjoy and interpret nature and reach the most impressive spots in the valley. This is one of the activities included in the Cherry Blossom Festival, declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest, which this year returns in style after two years without being held, with gastronomic and cultural activities and numerous proposals to get to know the agricultural life and nature of the valley. The festival begins on 20 March and lasts until 7 May, when the cherry trees shed their blossoms in the so-called Rain of Petals (from 10 April to 7 May).
Whenever you come this spring, you are going to have an impressive spectacle and a great plan in front of you. Go to the Jerte Valley in the morning, walk, visit, look. Taste the local gastronomy and enjoy the festive atmosphere. And then go down to Cáceres, just an hour and a half away, and relax in our hotel. The next day, you can visit the historic centre of the monumental city on a very pleasant walk and try some typical dishes that scream "you'll want to come back".
