Exploring the Ornithological Routes of Caceres

5 October 2023

The ornithological routes of Cáceres are birdwatching itineraries found in the city of Cáceres, in the region of Extremadura, Spain. These routes are ideal for bird lovers, as they offer the opportunity to see a wide variety of species in a natural environment.

Cáceres is one of the areas with the greatest ornithological diversity in Spain and this is due to its location. It is close to three Special Protection Areas for Birds: ZEPA of the Llanos de Cáceres and Sierra de Fuentes, Sierra de San Pedro and the Lesser Kestrel Colony of the Monumental City of Cáceres. This makes the city an ideal destination for ornithological tourism.

Cáceres Bird Festival

This month is usually celebrated as the Cáceres Bird Festival organised by the Regional Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Sports of the Regional Government of Extremadura, in which ornithological routes are programmed and other activities such as conferences, workshops, exhibitions and field trips for birdwatching are carried out for ornithology and nature lovers from all over the world.

Its aim is to promote the conservation and knowledge of the birds that inhabit Extremadura. It has a series of events programmed for all audiences, young and old. This makes this festival an enriching and enjoyable experience.

The Cáceres tourism portal provides information on the tourist resources available for birdwatching in the city.

Birdwatching sites

We highlight three, but there are many more in the city.

La Ribera del Marco, natural heritage. Migratory birds can be observed, the most common in this area are the cranes in the months between October and November and February and March.

The Sierra de la Mosca, better known as "La Montaña", being the highest area of the Llanos de Cáceres SPA.

San Marquino viewpoint, a tourist attraction for its incredible views and an excellent place for bird watching.

Bird Watching Routes

There are three Bird Watching routes in Cáceres and all of them guarantee a unique experience.

The Cáceres Historical Centre Watching Route will allow us to discover a great variety of birds, among them the most outstanding, the white stork, a symbol of Cáceres. Another outstanding species is the lesser kestrel. The Torre de Bujaco, the Plaza de San Jorge, the Rincón de la Monja street, the Torre de los Pozos and the Plaza San Mateo are all within this area.

The second route, the Guadiloba Reservoir Route, is highly recommended for true birdwatching enthusiasts, as you can see truly captivating birds. The grey heron, the great bustard or the common stork, among others. This route is outside the city, but it is well worth a visit.

The most complete route through the Old Town is the A Vista de Pájaro Route, starting at the Town Hall of Cáceres, passing through the entire Monumental City and ending back at the Town Hall.
